USB Adapters tested:
Device Class Comment Belkin F8T001 1 Best of the four tested. Great range. Reasonable price. Dlink DBT-120 2 Worst Range. IOGear GBU301 1 Range could have been better. EPoX BT-DG02 2 Cheapest. Make sure you're using the right Bluetooth software on the PC end of things. The software should be by Widcomm (version 1.2.2.6).
Procedure:
1. Disable the Bluetooth Services
- After installing the BT adapter & software, complete the pairing process between the Palm and the PC. (Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in System Tray and select > Setup > Security) Make sure the Tungsten has Bluetooth ON and is Discoverable)
- In the Bluetooth Device folder - disable the following services (set them to manual):
Network access,
Information exchange,
Information Sync,
File transfer,
Fax and Dial-up,
Networking Services.- Your Bluetooth devices folder should look something like this.
- Make a note of the Bluetooth Serial Port number.
2. Uncheck "Local Serial" on the Hotsync Manager
3. Create the RAS port on the WinXP machine
- Control Panel > Modems > New Modem
- Select "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list."
- Click "Next." Highlight "Communications cable between two computers"
- Click "Next."
- On the next screen, under the question "On which ports do you want to install it?" choose "Selected ports." Then highlight the serial port used by your BT adapter for Serial Port.
- Click "Next," and when available, click "Finish."
4. Configure the modem:
- Control Panel > Modems
- In the "Phone and Modem Options" window, highlight the modem added above and click "Properties."
- Click the "Modem" tab. Change the "Maximum Port Speed" to 115200 (or higher, if available).
- Click "OK" and then close the "Phone and Modem Options" window.
5. Add a user
- Control Panel > Users: Add a new user (I named the user "palm" with a password = "palm")
6. Set up Incoming Connection
- Right click on "My network Places" select Properties
- Select "Create a new connection."
- Click "Next" in the "New Connection Wizard" window.
- Click the "Set up an advanced connection" radio button.
- Click "Next."
- Click the "Accept incoming connections radio button.
- Check ONLY the box containing the modem created previously (probably named "Communications cable between two computers").
- Click "Next."
- Click "Do not allow virtual private connections."
- Click "Next."
- At the "User Permissions" screen, check the new user "palm"
- Click "Next,"
- Click "Finish"
7. REBOOT the Computer
8. Create the Connection on the Tungsten:
- Preferences > Communication > Connection > NEW
- Name : BT-PC (or something like that)
- Connect to : Local Network
- Via: Bluetooth
- Device: (the paired name of the BT adapter)
- Select OK
- Preferences > Communication > Network > NEW
- Service : PPP to PC (or something like that)
- User name: palm
- Password: palm
- Connection: BT-PC (the name you assigned the connection)
- Select > DETAILS >
- Query DNS: checked
- IP address: Automatic
- Select SCRIPT >
Add the following:
Send: CLIENT
Send: CLIENT
Wait for: CLIENTSERVER
End:
Notes
1. If you still cannot connect try changing the TCP/IP settings on the "Incoming Connections" network connection.
2. If you are using a firewall like Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security, make sure the IP address assigned to the Palm is trusted.
3. After making a connection, open a command prompt window and check the properties of the RAS interface:
